Mobile Catering Unit – What Makes a Good Location?

As the name suggests, a mobile catering unit is mobile. In theory, this means therefore that that units can be located just about anywhere. But while this is certainly true in practice too, there are some places are better than others, as we discuss in this post.

Low Direct Competition

A lot of food outlets in one area can look intimidating for a prospective catering trailer owner. But this shouldn’t necessarily put you off from setting up your mobile catering unit alongside the other food providers. In fact, lots of food retailers in the same place can actually be good news: it can indicate a prosperous area. However, what you may want to avoid is setting up shop in a location that has a lot of direct competition, i.e. those vans selling a similar or exactly the same product to yours.

High Footfall (or at least the potential for it)

Areas such as airports, train stations and shopping centres all attract high footfall, so can be the perfect place for a mobile catering unit. However, the mobile nature of the units mean that you can be a bit creative about where you set up shop. For instance, an empty field can also have potential to attract a lot of traffic; think about Glastonbury. Other areas that can be empty at some times of the year and packed at other include exhibition centres and stadiums. Check the schedule of any such event arenas near you for things like sporting occasions, festivals and concerts.

Profitability

Owning a mobile catering unit is like any other business, sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate. If that means paying a high rate for potentially very profitable spot then this may be worth doing. However, what you don’t want to do is pay a premium for a patch that doesn’t offer much return on your investment. Before deciding on a plot, research the area thoroughly; and don’t be afraid to ask the land owner for any pertinent statistics.
